I seem to be in the documentary phase of my life right now. After watching one about the Nazis, homeopathy and the effects of high vitamins intakes I have found the one documentary that really touched my heart. This is not just any type of documentary that you watch and think ‘oh yeah that’s sad but what can I do?’
When I watched ‘The cove’ I knew that I could not just sit there and let it all go by without actually doing something. When I was still a kid I had the wonderful chance of seeing dolphins in the wild and since then I have been in love with whales and dolphins. These fantastic creatures are far more intelligent than we can imagine. I am sureĀ that they can communicate with us if we would finally get over the fact that all animals need to speak to be understood and need to shake our hands to be polite. Most of the noises that these animals make are at voices so high we can’t even hear it. But guess what? You’re wiener might even be able to hear them! So what does that say about how intelligent we really are? Mother Nature was smart enough not to equip us with the best hearing tools so that some animals would at least get a little bit of peace from our cruel ways of living with them.
I do not want to criticize any nation here even though I know that Japan is the big one in this movie. But I do think that we all need to look more at what our countries are doing with the animals that live in our world. I am not here to tell you to stop eating meat or go crazy on a raw vegan diet. Oh NO! But I invite you to join me in understanding how our system works and that you as a customer can choose what you buy and what you don’t.
When I eat meat or dairy products I buy them from a farm where I know the animals are treated well and earn the respect they deserve. This is all I am asking of all the humans in this world. To stop thinking meat and dairy grows on trees. Good morning! It does not and sadly all the countries in the world have been abusing the luxury goods of food that we have nowadays. Think about it, our meat has become our vegetables and our vegetables have become our cake. Something is wrong here right?
Of course this does not apply to all the people. And thise who have developedĀ an ED and are probably aware and sensitive enough to know about animal welfare. But still it would be wonderful if you could do one thing to make this world a better place. It’s nothing big and only takes 1 min of your day.

It’s lovely that you’re so passionate about this Neela! I don’t eat meat or dairy (NOT that I ever judge anyone who does – the dairy thing is only due to my allergy anyway) so I relate a lot to your message. Dolphins are such lovely creatures, it’s terrible that they are killed needlessly.

Done! And you’re so right – people have to become more aware of what they’re doing and what they’re consuming!
Being a meat and fish eater myself, I try to by free range and sustainable as much as I can, and I’m looking forward to the day when I earn enough to buy 100 % organic. I feel the best with eating the fish my dad catches himself because he just goes out with his boat and catches what we’re going to eat, and no other animals are affected by it.

great post; I always think of finding nemo when the sharks say “fish are friends, not food. except dolphins…” not to bring humor to the situation or anything. this message is so important- thanks for sharing it

This is a beautiful post. Thank you for sharing this.
It’s so funny to hear some people who are incredibly oblivious to where their dinner has come from. I’ve heard both comments, “I’ve been eating hamburgers all my life so why should I change just because people are telling me that the way the animals are treated is humane” or just flatly “I don’t care”-when I try to explain better ways to treat the animals and/or why vegetarianism isn’t a diet or a fad. Needless to say, I had no comment to their nonchalant attitude.
“And thise who have developed an ED and are probably aware and sensitive enough to know about animal welfare” –> that’s actually quite true! I know one girl who’s a huge animal activist/vegan extremist and she went through some ed’s in her lifetime. However, she’s much better now and her compassion towards animal welfare has nothing to do with her ed.
P.S. signed the petition
P.P.S. (sorry about my mini rant in there haha).

Neela,
I watched that documentary a while ago – certainly an eye-opening experience. I agree with you wholeheartedly; we can make a difference and it all begins with understanding and education.
I’m quite the documentary addict myself and I highly recommend you check out two of my own favorites:
Darwin’s Nightmare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin%27s_Nightmare)
and
Living In Emergency (http://www.livinginemergency.com)
Also, this site has an array of interesting films: http://freedocumentaries.org/

I’m actually a documentary whore. I cant get enough of them. And I cried my eyes out watching the cove, its so sad.
One of my favorite documentaries is “One Day in September” which feels like a thriller movie.
I didn’t actually love the “ED” documentary HBO did called “Thin”. its was alright, but its always been my dream to make a different, more “real” one.

Signed both the petition and the letter to President Obama! Thanks for bringing attention to this Neela! It absolutely astounds me how people can be so cruel to animals. I honestly could not watch this documentary. I doubt I’d ever stop crying or sleep again!!

You are beautiful, and so is this post.
You are right that we need to stop and think about what we are doing to this planet. We treat nature like we own it, like it’s our right to take whatever we crave in whatever amount we “need”. A lot of humans seem to have distanced themselves from nature, they no longer see the beauty and worth – they only see opportunities to make money or satisfy personal interests.
Thank you for sharing this – it’s a very important issue.
