thick, luscious and healthy hair is probably something every woman wants to have. i mean nowadays it’s literally impossible to walk into a drug store without being flooded by different hair products that promise to give you that mane of gorgeous hair you always dreamed of. well i have to say that nature is not always fair when it comes to the kind of hair you have. some people are naturally blessed with thick and strong hair while others have thin and fragile hair.
what i did for my hair on the outside
probably one of my favorite things to do is to try out new hair products. i love discovering the new aromas they bring to my hair and the texture and life it gives to my hair.
still the overall winner of all my hair trials has been Kerastase with their wonderful and extensive range of hair care.
i am aware that these products are not cheap at all. and being a student on a budget i can completely understand why one would not want to buy them. however i have noticed that less-is-more with these products. i only wash my hair every 3-4 days and use about a coin worth of shampoo on my hair. the other days i tend to just wash my hair with water and apply some conditioner to the ends to prevents them from drying out in Singapore humidity.
i have also put together a few other shampoos that i highly recommend if you live in a country where they are available. My family regularly stocks up on good shampoos when we go back home to europe and buy suitcases full of Nivea and Guhl shampoos. Guhl is actually by far the best- regular priced shampoo that i have ever tried.
but that’s not all. sometimes our hair needs a little more to really shine. This is where i like to use hair mask, leave in treatments and oils overnight to help the hair ends get the moisture they need. I usually use simple olive oil or coconut oil as suggested by katharina and leave it on overnight. But i have also heard that mashing up an avocado and spreading it into your hair can work wonders. haven’t tried it yet but i am very curious to try it out!
what i did for my hair on the inside
my hair has always been somewhere in-between thin and thick. there were a few years where my hair really suffered from the lack of healthy fats and b-vitamins in my diet. My hair now has begun to recover just like i did. I can’t even stress enough how much fats do play a role in the way that your hair looks. i never quite believed this until i started incorporating avocados, nuts, seeds and oils into my diet.
now that i shared my secrets to making my hair and roots happier i’d love to hear from you what you do?? or are you one of those god-blessed ladies who has flawless hair without any help?? oh i envy you!

you have beautiful hair miss neela!! i love kerastase, such a great brand. true it’s pricey, but i’m like you and don’t wash my hair everyday and when i do i don’t use a lot of product! hair and skin care are things that i splurge on because a little goes a long way and you’ve only got one body so we should take care of it!

kerastase is the best. 100% agree.
Guhl. Never heard of it and figures, it’s not readily available here. Sigh.
Your good fats/hair comment. TOTALLY yes i agree.
The last pic of you….OMG Neela you’re stunning. Just drop dead gorgeous
THx for the comment you left re being inspired by the kind of mother I am; that has stuck with me all nite and truly, I thank you for saying that.
Love you honey!!!!!!

You have fabulous hair
wish I could say the same for mine. Even pre-ED it was always dry, thin and brittle, kind of like straw hehe
I really like Schwartzkopf products…they seem to agree with my hair better than most.
I never thought about the link between fats and good hair – that’s interesting – I could probably do with incoporating a bit more fat into my diet, so perhaps this might help?

Your hair IS shining
so beautiful little Neela. I have never tried any of those products, but want to now! I usually just stick with pantene… need to branch out!!

I use kerastase hair mask (the orange one) actually as conditioner. just as you say, a little goes a long way. but I haven’t found a good shampoo yet, so I’ll see if I can find Gulf. Thanks for the tips!

I’m still on the search for the right products because I have super-curly, frizzy hair. But my #1 is coconut oil

Yes, your hair is shiny…you glow with this inner peace…i do not if u feel it all the time….but i see that potential and trait inherent in you….!
I have dry hair…dry skin…little glow….I hope that with some gaining of health and mental happiness in life, my outer might reflect a bit more shine with time…

i love kerastase
my hair loves it too!
I LOVE HAIR PRODUCTS THAT SMELL LIKE HAIR SALONS, NOT WATERMELON SPRAY!
theres a product called OSIS Dust
it rock for getting volume.. you pop the powder on and just shag it up and it does something indescribable.

Wow you sure take good care of your hair, and that is definitely evident in the photo! I’m quite a low maintenance girl actually. Just regular shampoo from watsons/guardian (either pantene or sunsilk). I love palmer’s for their body lotions, esp the cocoa butter ones. Real effective and keeps your skin super smooth.

I have naturally curly hair, which people like to say they wish they had, but my hair is very(!) frizzy and increases in frizziness unless I wash it every day or other day. :/ I use Paul Mitchell mousse or leave-in conditioner to try and tame it down, but it’s never 100% smooth
Your hair looks effortlessly gorgeous

i tried that coconut butter shampoo…made my head itchy…
i totally agree with only washing my hair like 2-3 times a week. keeps it shiny! never heard of avacados on hair though…im so into doing new hair shining treatments i will try this deifnitely

I love putting coconut oil in my hair, and my shampoo has coconut in it as well; I just love the smell! I’ve heard that you can make a hair mask from eggs as well, but I’ve never tried.
Your comment about fats is so true though, and not only for hair but for skin and nails as well.
I’ve never tried Keratase before but I might have to venture out and buy some; seems like it gets great reviews.

I LOVE KERASTASE! And you’re right- it’s definitely an investment for shiny, luxurious hair (I also only wash my hair 2x per week or else it gets all limp). I used to use a LOT of hair products to keep my naturally wavy (frizzy in humidity) hair under control- but now I just shampoo & condition 2x per week, sometimes straighten and then use a tiny dab of the Aveda anti-humectant pommade to prevent my hair from poofing out if rain or humidity ensues. It’s $30 per jar but I swear this thing will last me years!

i agree!! i didn’t even realize my hair was like falling out when i was neglecting my body of fats… weird. i love this post
you are a beauty, neela!! you really are

I love trying different hair care product too. I’ve never heard of Guhl. They must not have it in the US? My favorite brand is Biolage. It smells so good. I’ll definitely have to try using coconut oil or avocado on my hair. It needs some shine!
February 6th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
my hair looks pretty miserable lately, and I don’t know what to do :/
fats and b-vitamins, I think I should try that
February 7th, 2010 at 6:46 am
Kerastase is the best! Their masques are the only conditioners I use on my hair. You will definitely see an improvement with their products!
